The Transbaikal State University is the largest educational institution in the Baikal Region. It has 22,000 students, and the faculty and staff make about 2,000. The University trains for a number of technical specialties (Mining, Energy Engineering, Construction, Mechanical Engineering,Computer Engineering, etc.), humanitarian and social specialties (Economics, State Management, Law, Social Studies, Cultural Studies, Religion Studies,Oriental Studies (China), American Studies (the USA and Canada), Journalism, Philology, Pedagogy,  etc.). The University has 15 faculties which offer specialist's,  bachelor's and master's degree courses. It also has post-graduate courses in technical, social and humanitarian fields. There are Master's Degree courses in English (Cultural Studies, American Studies) and Chinese (Oriental Studies/China) languages. The University offers special courses for foreign students from China, Mongolia, and the Republic of Korea.
