Tomsk is a cradle of Siberian education and research. The city is known as Siberian Athens from the XIX century. Tomsk regional system of higher education is represented by 6 state universities (classical, polytechnic, medical, pedagogical, university of architecture and building and university of control systems and radioelectronics), 3 private universities and 6 branches of higher educational institutions from other cities.

Tomsk State and Tomsk Polytechnic Universities enjoy the status of National Research Universities (NR TSU and NR TPU). They are in the list of the most valuable objects of Russia’s cultural heritage. Seversk State Technological Institute is a branch of National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. In 2013 NR TSU and NR TPU developed their Competitiveness Programs to achieve the status of world leading educational and research centers. These two universities are in Top-15 universities of Russia facing the challenge to enter Top-100 world universities.

Today NR TSU and NR TPU are respectively ranked among 500 and 550 world’s best universities. Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) is a founder and a leader of the Association of Russian Entrepreneurial Universities. TUSUR implements innovative educational programs in IT. Siberian State Medical University (SSMU) is a recognized leader of medical science and clinical studies. SSMU acts as a coordinator of the Federal Technology Platform «Medicine of the Future». More than 200 small innovative companies are spinouts of Tomsk universities.

Tomsk universities train about 65 400 people, one in five Tomsk residents is a student. Tomsk is 3rd in Russia (behind Moscow and Saint-Petersburg) in the number of students per 10 000 habitants. At the moment students from 75 regions of Russia and 47 foreign countries study in Tomsk universities. Tomsk offers professional training in 104 fields of studies and 199 majors. There are 3 500 of Candidates and Doctors of Science among Tomsk professors and researchers. More than 70 doctoral and 300 candidate theses are defended every year.

International cooperation of Tomsk universities is aimed at the development of academic mobility (exchange programs). Tomsk universities may boast Master-level Double Degree programs with universities of Germany, France, Poland, Mongolia and other countries. Several thousands of Tomsk students benefit from these programs. The share of international students in Tomsk universities is about 8%.
