The Institute was founded by the former Soviet Union Cabinet of Ministers on May 29, 1979, as the Tajik State Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature. In 1992, on the basis of a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Tajik Republic, it was reorganized into the Tajik State Institute of Languages. On April 29, 2009, by resolution of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan the institute was renamed “The Tajik State Institute of Languages named after Sotim Ulughzoda”.
Today, TSIL educates 2500 students.
The university staff includes 250-300 persons, local and foreign professors from Russia, USA, Germany, Iran, China, Japan, Egypt, and Korea.
The TSIL structure is not very large: it has 3 faculties – the Faculty of Russian Philology, the Faculty of Romanic-German languages, the Faculty of Oriental Languages-, two departments – the Correspondence Education Department, the Department of post-graduate studies, Technological Park, and short-term computer and language courses.
